Just like the times it was first introduced to Sri Lanka, Batik artistry has always been the realm of village
based women, who create beautiful designs on clothes with just dexterity of their hands and pure
imagination. One such woman was Padmini, who combined her inherent design skills, years of
experience, solid work ethic and business skills to create Shreedevi Batik.
Located in the picturesque town of Mahawewa on Sri Lanka’s North Western coastal belt, the beautiful surrounds gave Padmini the inspiration more than 30 years ago to forge ahead with her dream. At that point Batik craft was in the doldrums - Batik arts and fashion were restricted as a merchandise for the foreign tourists and most of the batik sales outlets were limited to tourist based locations and hotels in the coastal zone. Padmini had the vision that one day the Batik craft would have its rightful place.
She did not believe in plagiarism so she took the risk of making one-off designs. It paid off. Shreedevi Batik products, from humble beginnings, today enjoys popular status among the fashion conscious public of Sri Lanka. Together with her daughter Shamila and son-in-law Ramesh, the company evolved and is today a truly Sri Lankan, ethical workplace that works to preserve the most beautiful of textile arts.
Their staff team is like family – they work in ethical conditions and are treated with respect and dignity.
As Batik is a craft that uses chemicals in the process, a sprawling, well-ventilated factory allows enough
air circulation to ensure industry safety standards.
Shreedevi Batik products stand out in the market because they are not only elegant and progressive in their designs, but their pricing structure is realistic. Their designs are exclusive but not eccentric, and their customer engagement is one of close and personal relationships. Shreedevi Batik is a truly Sri Lankan company immersed in the traditional warmth and kindness of Sri Lankan industry of the past. They believe that happy team members make beautiful products and have never wavered from this belief.
